BASIL A. GUFFEY STAUNTON, VA Basil Arrie Guffey, 86, husband of Clara (Slayton) Guffey, of 1828 Vinson Street, died Monday, August 8, 2011, at Envoy of Staunton. He was born November 12, 1924 in Spottswood, a son of the late William Burks and Martha (Sensabaugh) Guffey. Mr. Guffey was a U.S. Army veteran having served during World War II. Prior to retirement, he was employed by Coca Cola with 30 years of service and was also a school crossing guard for the Staunton Police. He was a member of Westside Baptist Church and the Staunton VFW Post 2216. In addition to his wife of 62 years, family members include three sons, Roy Guffey of Staunton, Basil Guffey, Jr., of North Carolina, and Joseph W. Guffey of Kentucky; a daughter, Patricia Hiner of Staunton; five grandchildren; and a number of great grandchildren. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, August 12, 2011, in the Henry Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Ethan Allison. Burial will follow in Oak Lawn Mausoleum and Memory Gardens. Military rites will be conducted by the Staunton VFW Post 2216. Active pallbearers will be Chris Guffey, J. C. Bryant, Robert Spitzer, Roy Guffey, Basil Guffey, Jr., and Joseph Guffey. The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 p.m. Thursday, August 11, 2011, in the funeral home and other times at the residence.
