Betty Collins Critz, 86, passed away Friday, March 15, 2024, at Brookdale Staunton with loved ones by her side.
She was born on July 5, 1937 in Staunton, to the late Walter Sr. and Edna Collins.
Betty is survived by her daughter, Dana Critz Abernathy (John) of Greenbrier, TN; her nieces, Jane Campfield Nessar and Leslie Campbell Marsh; and her nephews, Denny Collins, Mike Campfield, and Doug Campbell and Blake Critz and William Critz.
Betty had many close friends that she loved very much: Judy Cox, Evelyn Jones, and Virgie Wilhoit were especially helpful over the last few years. Their kindness and caring for Betty will not be forgotten.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Neil Patterson Critz; her sisters, Jeane Collins Campfield and Mary Della Collins Campbell; and a brother, Walter Collins, Jr.Betty is known for her generosity, humor and incredible singing voice. You always knew when Betty was in the nave at church. Her voice was so strong. She belonged to multiple choirs at Fishersville Baptist, First Baptist, and for many years, led the children’s choir at Loch Willow Presbyterian in Churchville.
Betty loved to travel and share those adventures with her friends and her sister, Jeane. There are some great stories and memories that were created on those trips. Her joy was having a crowd (as long as she did not have to cook!) and bringing people together.
She graduated from Robert E. Lee High School in 1955, then majored in Voice and Education at Shenandoah College and Conservatory. She taught music and chorus at Shelburne Junior High School, Robert E. Lee High School, and other Staunton City schools from 1960 – 1993. She also loved musicals, opera, and going to hear local concerts.
In 2021 Betty was inducted into the Dayton Shenandoah College and Conservatory Hall of Fame.
The family would like to especially thank the caring staff at Brookdale, Debbie Melton, and Jessica Smith.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM on Friday, March 29, 2024, at Henry Funeral Home in Staunton.
