Betty Durrett Hevener Gum, 85, passed away on Monday, December 16, 2024, at Lynchburg General Hospital.
She was born on January 20, 1939, in Albemarle County to the late Charles Berlin, Sr. and Erma Lambert Hevener.
Betty was a 1959 graduate of Robert E. Lee High School in Staunton. She dedicated a significant portion of her life to serving others, particularly as a long-time cafeteria worker for the Staunton City Schools. Betty was not just known for her professional contributions; she was also a devoted member of the Staunton Church of Christ. Her deep faith and commitment to serving the lord were remarkable, and she found immense joy in reading her Bible.
Beyond her professional and faith life, Betty had a profound love for her friends and family. Betty also had a passion for bird watching.
She is survived by her daughter, Cynthia Lynn Gum Wood and her husband, Brent; her sister-in-law, Jean Hevener; numerous nieces and nephews. Betty was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Charles William Gum; her brothers, Charles “Jake” Berlin Hevener, Jr. and Ralph Bickley Hevener; and her sisters, Mary Louvinna Hevener, Ruby Lucille Hevener and Mozelle “Kitty” Elizabeth Hevener Stone.
A graveside service will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, December 23, 2024, at Thornrose Cemetery in Staunton.
