Bobby Gene Worrell, a loving husband, father, brother, and esteemed member of his community, passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 9, 2023, at Sunnyside Retirement Community in Rockingham County.

He was born on February 6, 1939, in Princeton, West Virginia to Vernal Rex and Sara Francis Abshire Worrell.

Bob will be remembered for his impressive twenty-year career in the United States Navy, where he retired with the rank of Chief Petty Officer. His dedication and commitment to his military service were exemplary. After retiring from the Navy, Bob transitioned to civilian life and went on to hold the position of Assistant Vice President at Crestar Bank's (and later SunTrust) Staunton Branch until his retirement in 1995.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Bob had a multitude of interests and hobbies that enriched his life. He was an active member of the Gypsy Hill Express Train Committee, serving on the Board of Directors and as their Treasurer for six years. Additionally, Bob dedicated himself to Covenant Presbyterian Church in Staunton, where he served as an Elder and Treasurer for six years on their Board of Directors. His commitment extended to the Rotary Club of Staunton as well, where he served on the Board of Directors and held the position of Treasurer for one year. Bob's involvement in these organizations demonstrated his unwavering dedication to making a positive impact within his community.

In addition to his loving wife of forty-nine years, Shirley Anne Hardy Worrell, he is survived by his daughter, Tamara Leigh McCray; his brother, Larry Rex Worrell, Sr. and his wife, Ellie; his sister, Linda Sue Worrell Kidd and her husband, Steve; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Bobbie Jean Worrell Sprouse; a sister, Brenda Lilly Worrell Hites; his brothers, William Franklin, Richard Edwin, Blaine Augustus, and Floyd Worrell; and his first wife, Della June Roberts Worrell.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM on Thursday, December 14, 2023 at Henry Funeral Home in Staunton. A funeral service will be conducted at 3:00 PM on Friday, December 15, 2023 at Covenant Presbyterian Church in Staunton with the Reverend John C. Peterson officiating.

Interment will be at Immanuel Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Middlebrook and is private.

Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Bill Stoner, Alex Banks, Julian Moffett, Tom Feathers, Fred Repass, Chris Earhart, and Fred Mader.

The family would especially like to thank the staff of Sunnyside and Dr. Chernoff's staff for all the loving care and compassion shown to Bob in his later years.

It is suggested that those desiring may make memorial contributions to the Sunnyside Fellowship Fund (600L University Boulevard, Harrisonburg, VA 22801) or Covenant Presbyterian Church (2001 North Coalter Street, Staunton, VA 24401).

Bob will always be remembered for his dedication to his country, his commitment to his community, and most importantly, his love for his family.
