Brenda Bogan Painter, 77, of Blythewood, SC, formerly of Staunton, VA, died on February 21, 2025 after a brave two year battle with cancer.
Brenda was born in Staunton, VA on August 13, 1947, the daughter of Merle and Irene Bogan.
She was a 1965 graduate of Robert E. Lee High School. She continued her education at Ferrum College and Radford University, where she received degrees in home economics and early childhood education. She also did post graduate work at the University of Virginia, Madison College, and the University of South Carolina.
Brenda started her teaching career as a First Grade teacher at Jackson-Wilson Elementary School in Waynesboro, Virginia. Upon marrying, Brenda joined her husband in South Carolina where she taught in several early childhood development programs in the Columbia, South Carolina area.
Beginning in 1977, she stayed home to raise her two children, but did volunteer work in their schools. In this capacity, she joined with other parents to create a college and career center at Dutch Fork High School, which received an award from South Carolina Governor David Beasley. When her youngest child left for college, she returned to the education field as a co-director and teacher in several after school programs in Lexington County, South Carolina.
In addition to her parents, Brenda was preceded in death by her sister, Carolyn B. Heitzman of White Bear Lake, Minnesota (Gordon); her sister-in-law Marcella P. Mears formerly of Lexington and Staunton, VA (Bill); and her brother-in-law, Simon M. Painter, Jr. (Vickie)
She is survived by her husband, Samuel F. Painter of Blythewood, SC, and her two children, Laura M. Painter (Richie) of Columbia, SC and S. Bogan Painter of Charleston, SC. She is also survived by her sister, Ellen B. Woosley of Waynesboro, VA (Larry), and her brother-in-law, Allan B. Painter, II, of Staunton, VA.
A graveside service will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, March 8, 2025, at Thornrose Cemetery in Staunton. Henry Funeral Home in Staunton is assisting the family with the service in Virginia.
In lieu of flowers, the family would request donations to Samaritan's Purse (P.O. Box 3000, Boone, NC 28607) or to a charity of your choice.
Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, is assisting the family in Columbia, South Carolina.
