Brenda Pollard Franklin, 73, took her last breath on August 7, 2022, at 11:11 p.m. She was at home, surrounded by loved ones.
She is survived by her daughter, Sara Leigh Franklin (Larry); husband, Ted Teachey; brother, Tom Pollard; and sister, Cheryl Houck (Gary). She is also survived by much-loved nieces and nephews, three grand-nephews, and a special friend, Michele Taylor.
Brenda always said she grew up at Western State Hospital, where her parents both worked. She started her career there as an aide, then after attending Blue Ridge, worked as a mental health technician. She returned to school at VCU where she received her BSW, then returned to Western State as a Social Worker. She completed her education with an MSW from West Virginia University, and retired from Western State in 2010. Brenda loved all music, but she loved the Grateful Dead most of all, attending more than a dozen concerts over the years. Al-Anon was an important part of her life for the last 25 years, and she received much love and support from members over the years.
Hospice of the Shenandoah provided invaluable services during the last month of Brenda’s life, enabling her to remain in her home while receiving comfort care and other services. Both Brenda and the family particularly appreciated the loving support from the hospice bath aide and her private caregiver.
Her love of life and infectious smile will be missed by all who knew her.
A Celebration of Life is being planned for mid-September.
