Caroline E. Benedick

Caroline Elizabeth Benedick, 78, died peacefully on July 9, 2023 at home, surrounded by her husband and sons. She was born on October 19, 1944 in Staunton, to the late William Robert and Jean Louisa (Larner) Gray.

Caroline grew up in Washington, DC, where she graduated from Anacostia High School and then attended Heidelberg College in Ohio for two years as a French language major.  Caroline worked as a bank secretary and also worked in the personnel department of the University of Maryland - University College. She was an extraordinary minister of Holy Communion at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in College Park, MD, and was active in the Catholic Daughters and Hope Committee at St. Paul’s Catholic Church.

Caroline had an infectious smile, and was very sensitive and empathetic to others’ feelings.  The grace and ease with which she was able to comfort, encourage, and to show love was inspirational.  Caroline embraced motherhood and lovingly cared for her husband and four sons.  

Caroline is survived by her husband, Gerald R. Benedick who she married on June 13, 1970 at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in College Park, MD.  They shared one love, one lifetime together for 53 years. She is also survived by her four sons and their wives, Christopher Benedick (Amanda), Geoffrey Benedick (Kathryn), Todd Benedick (Andrea), and Mathew Benedick (Amy); eight grandchildren, Bailey Benedick, Bryce Benedick, George Benedick, Frank Benedick, Josephine Benedick, Genevieve Benedick, Emily Humphreys, and Kathryn Ross; first cousins, Mary (William) Shiflet, Sarah (Tracy) Wilkins, Donita (John) Aruny, Mary Gray, Martin (Marilyn) Gray, and Gary (Wendy) Gray; and numerous nephews and nieces.

A Memorial Mass for Caroline was held at St. Paul’s Catholic Church, Damascus, MD, on July 18, 2023.   A graveside service and burial will be held at Thornrose Cemetery in Staunton, VA, on August 26, 2023 at 11:00 am.  Preceding this service, all are welcome to freshen up at Henry Funeral Home across the street from the cemetery.    There will be a luncheon reception after this service at Caroline’s cousin, Sarah Wilkins, Larner Loft, off of East Beverly Street in downtown Staunton. All are welcome.
