Carolyn M. Childress

It is with profound sadness, the family of Carolyn Marie Childress announces her departure from this life on Saturday, August 17, 2024, at the age of 72, in Staunton.

Carolyn, affectionately known as “Peewee”, was born on March 5, 1952, in Augusta County. She was the daughter of the late Julius Edwin and Elsie Mildred Smith Childress.

Upon completing her education, Carolyn proudly spent the majority of her career in service to the Federal Government, working with the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) and the Department of Defense. Her numerous contributions over her 29 years of service earned her several awards and accolades including Employee of the Quarter, Total Quality Award, and an Outstanding Individual Award for the DLA Women’s Observance.

After her many years of exceptional Federal Service, Carolyn worked as a Paralegal, continuing to serve by helping those who needed her expertise wherever possible. She was known for her generosity and unwavering support that was offered to anyone in need. She dedicated her life to guiding others, often stepping up to keep them on the right path and out of trouble.

Carolyn was a lover of life’s simple pleasures, and often found immense happiness in family gatherings and holidays. Above all, she adored her family, especially her grandchildren. She was a constant presence at their sporting events, cheering them on with unwavering enthusiasm. Her love and pride for them was evident to all who knew her.

She is survived by her husband, James Harmon; her sons, Steve Childress (Tonya) and Anthony Childress (Lindsey); her brother, Coleman Childress (Minnie); her sisters, Vanessa and Jacqueline Childress; her grandchildren, Brittany Tines, Tyler Childress, Jasmine Childress, Jackson Childress, Jalyn Childress and Tyson\ Childress; her great-grandchild, Elias Barnes; her nephew, Brandon Childress; as well as many other nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her brothers, Milton Cornelius Childress (Gladys) and Charles Edwin Childress, and a sister, Opal Mae Childress Nelson (Floyd).

The family wishes privacy as they say a final farewell to their beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend.
