Catherine “Nana” Audrey (Smith) Fitzpatrick, 92, widow of John Arthur Fitzpatrick, Sr., passed away Wednesday, March 15, 2023 at her residence.
Mrs. Fitzpatrick was born on November 22, 1930 in Staunton to the late James Osborne and Sadie “Big Mama” (Harris) Smith.
She was a very devoted member of Allen Chapel AME Church. Audrey loved her family dearly. She also loved camping, gardening, crocheting, and reading.
Audrey is survived by her children, Darnice F. Payne (Bishop T.E. Payne, Sr.), Audrey F. Banks (Charles, Sr.), Minister Sharon F. Darcus-Bowden (Jimmy), and Kay F. White (Charles); grandchildren, Minister Theodore Payne, Jr. (LaGoldia), Jonathan Payne (Sonya), Minister Mark Payne (Kera), Casaundra Banks-Darcus (Ernest), Charles S. Banks, Jr. (Sheba), Allen Darcus III (Teresa), Zachary Darcus (Amy), Stephanie Menashe (Gilead), Samone B. Coley, Sheila B. Woodard, Renae B. Merritt, Josiah Sims, Monty Sims, Ezell Green (Karina), Omarh Rajah (Vantrese), Catherine Fitzpatrick (Jay Armstrong), Michelle Fitzpatrick, and Timothy Fitzpatrick (Darlene McClean); and seventy-five great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; cousin, Ophelia W. Kier “Sister”; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband and parents, she is preceded in death by sons, John “Jeri” Fitzpatrick and John “Artie” Fitzpatrick, Jr.; and a sister, Elizabeth Smith Leech.
A funeral service will be conducted at 1:00 PM, Monday, March 20, 2023 at Allen Chapel AME Church with the Reverend Doctor Edward A. Scott officiating. Interment will follow at Oak Lawn Mausoleum and Memory Gardens.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
Active pallbearers will be her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Allen Chapel AME Church, 936 Sudbury St, Staunton, VA 24401.
