Donald G. Whiteman, 97, of Staunton, died on Wednesday, June 28, 2023 at Brightview Baldwin Park in Staunton after a short illness. 

A native of Monmouth, Illinois, Mr. Whiteman is survived by his daughters, Nancy Headifen and Wendy White of Staunton; his grandchildren, Whitney White Vaughn, Wesley White, and Wilson White; his great-granddaughter, Emerson Vaughn; his great-grandson Liam Vaughn; his sons-in-law, Richard Headifen and Warren White, all of Virginia; his brothers, Ralph of Illinois and Richard of South Carolina; as well as nieces and nephews in Illinois and Florida.

Mr. Whiteman was preceded in death by his loving wife, Joann, and his two sons, Thomas and Douglas. 

Mr. Whiteman, who moved to Staunton from Scottsdale, Arizona in 1999, was a member of the Covenant Presbyterian Church of Staunton and the Staunton Kiwanis Club. With his wife, he was a resident of Baldwin Park Retirement Community, and served several years as president and board member of the Baldwin Park Residents' Council. 

A longtime banker, Mr. Whiteman had been vice president of Northern Trust Company of Chicago, executive vice president and director of the United Bank of Arizona, and chief financial officer and director of the Northern Trust Company of Arizona. He also served for seven years as president and CEO of City Reconstruction Corporation of Los Angeles and Kansas City, which planned, financed, and constructed more than 1600 luxury high-rise apartment units in the downtown areas of Los Angeles, Tulsa and St. Paul during his administration. 

In Phoenix, he served as president of the Harvard Business School Club of Arizona, president of the Phoenix Kiwanis Club, and president of the Valley Presbyterian Foundation. He also served as treasurer and board member of the Flagstaff Festival of the Arts, a member of the board of the Phoenix United Way, and elder in the Presbyterian church. He served on the Monmouth (Ill.) College Board of Trustees for 13 years, including a term as vice chairman. 

Mr. Whiteman was a summa cum laude graduate of Monmouth College, where he had been president of the student body and editor of the school newspaper. He received an M.B.A. degree from the Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration, and was a graduate of the University of Wisconsin Graduate School of Banking. He served with the U.S. Navy during World War II as an ETM2/c. Mr. Whiteman was an avid tennis player, musician, and orchid grower.

The family has suggested, in lieu of flowers, memorial gifts to Monmouth College (700 E. Broadway, Monmouth, Illinois 61462) to a scholarship that has been set up in his name, or the Building Fund of Covenant Presbyterian Church of Staunton (2001 N. Coalter St., Staunton, Virginia 24401).

A celebration of life will be conducted at 2:00 PM, Tuesday, July 25, 2023 at Covenant Presbyterian Church (2001 N. Coalter Street, Staunton).
