Doris M. McSweeney

Doris Mary McSweeney died Monday, February 19, 2024 at the Augusts Health Shenandoah Hospice House in Fishersville.

She was born on Long Island, New York on April 9, 1926 to Charles T. and Mary (Schmitt) Cooper.

Doris was married to Terence W. McSweeney, MSGT, USMC from 1944 until his passing in 1994. Terence was a career Marine and veteran of WWII and Korea. Together, they had five children while they served in various locations. They settled in Willingboro, NJ, where Doris lived for the next fifty years.

Doris began working shortly after that move and worked for nearly fifty years, chiefly as an automotive bookkeeper and office manager until she was eighty-two. She moved to Staunton in 2012 to be cared for by her daughter Eileen and her husband, Harry Bruckno.

Doris is survived by her son, Terence W. Mc Sweeney, Jr. (wife, Virginia); her daughter, Eileen Bruckno (husband, Harry); and her son, Kevin T. McSweeney (wife, Patricia). She is also survived by many grandchildren, cousins, and nieces and nephews.

Doris is preceded in death by her parents, Charles T. Cooper and Mary (Schmitt) Cooper; her siblings, Eileen, Thomas, Charles and Patricia; her sons, Charles T. McSweeney and Sean P. McSweeney; and her grandchildren, Ryan McSweeney and Joseph Caione. 

Doris was a faithful member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Staunton and devoted to the memory of Jesus’ mother, Mary.

A rosary service will be held at 6:00 PM on Friday, March 1, 2024, at Henry Funeral Home in Staunton.

A funeral mass will be conducted at 1:00 PM on Saturday, March 2, 2024, at Saint John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Waynesboro.

Inurnment will take place at the National Cemetery in Beverly, NJ at a later date.
