Elton “Junior” Massie Hewitt, Jr., 96, widower of Margaret “Peggy” (Cook) Hewitt of Swoope, Virginia, passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 28, 2024, at Blue Ridge Christian Home in Raphine, Virginia.
Mr. Hewitt was born in Augusta County on October 3, 1928, son of the late Elton Massie Hewitt, Sr. and Ruby (Harris) Hewitt.
Junior was a dedicated husband, father, and grandfather, a respected farmer and cattleman, and an avid baseball fan. He was a lifetime member of Hebron Presbyterian Church, where he served for decades as Sunday School treasurer, deacon, and elder.
Mr. Hewitt was a co-owner of Staunton Union Stock Yards, which his family operated for over 75 years. He was a working partner in Riverside Stock Farm for more than 80 years, first with his father, E.M., and brother, Clay, and later with his son, David, and nephews, Neal, Dennis, and Jerry Hewitt.
In addition to his parents and his wife of 62 years, Mr. Hewitt was preceded in death by two sisters, Jean Wise and Eloise Moore, and brother, Clay Hewitt.
Surviving are his three children, son David Hewitt and wife, Laura Lee of Swoope, and two daughters, Susan Piche and husband, Claude of Roanoke, and Polly Hewitt of Swoope; two grandsons, Jeff Hewitt and Brad Hewitt and wife, Tiffany; step-granddaughter, Kim Piche Montgomery and family; a sister, Evie Kay Pyne of Staunton; and a number of nieces, nephews, and cousins. He is also survived by special friends, Deborah (Gayhart) and Bill Warren, and Sandy (Wood) and Rick Burton.
The family extends a special thanks to the wonderful friends and caregivers.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM, Thursday, January 2, 2025, at Hebron Presbyterian Church by the Reverend Doctor Henry D. Scoggins. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the church social hall and other times at David Hewitt's residence.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hebron Presbyterian Church Cemetery Fund, (423 Hebron Road, Staunton, VA 24401) and the Parkinson's Foundation (5757 Waterford District Drive, Suite 310, Miami, FL 33126).
