Evelyn K. Jones

Evelyn Kathleen Jones, 78, of Staunton went to be with the Lord on Friday, March 7, 2025, at Augusta Health in Fishersville.

She was born May 14, 1946, in Wilmington, NC to the late Alonzo Lycurgus, Jr. and Marguerite Marshburn Jones of Pulaski.

She grew up in Pulaski, VA and was a graduate of Pulaski High School and Radford College, where she majored in Health and Physical Education. She got her master’s degree in education from James Madison College. Upon graduating from college, she taught two years at Stonewall Jackson High School in Manassas, VA. After moving to Staunton, she taught at Robert E. Lee High School and Shelburne Middle School for thirty years. She taught Health and Physical Education, Driver’s Education, and Life Science. During her tenure, she also coached tennis at Lee High and sponsored the yearbook at Shelburne. At her retirement, she was the Chairman of the Science Department at Shelburne Middle School. She truly enjoyed her teaching career and loved both her students and colleagues.

She was active in her professional organizations, serving as President of the Staunton Education Association and the Virginia Education Association Communication Committee. She was Recording Secretary of the Augusta Retired Educators Association for many years. Evelyn was a hard worker but preferred to stay in the background.

Evelyn was an active member at Mt. Pisgah United Methodist Church in Mt. Sidney. She taught an adult Sunday school class and was an active member of the Craft Ladies group. She recently became a member of Christ United Methodist Church in Staunton. Evelyn was a woman of deep faith and a lifelong church participant.

She enjoyed traveling and had been to Europe, Canada, and all fifty states. Camping and fishing were her hobbies.

She is survived by her two nieces, Kassie and Suzanne Jones of Knoxville TN. She is also survived by her best friends, Judy L. Cox and Gracie of Staunton.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by a brother and sister-in-law, Allen Lawrence and Nancy Jones of Knoxville, TN.

The Lord blessed Ms. Jones with a wonderful family, great teaching experiences, and many good friends during her lifetime. She felt truly blessed.

A memorial service will be conducted at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, March 11, 2025, at Henry Funeral Home in Staunton with the Reverend Madison Ailinger officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, beginning at 1:00 PM.
