Ezell Alphonso Crawford, Sr., 90, widower of Yvonne Hart Crawford, a beloved figure in his community, passed away on Friday, March 14, 2025, at Kings Daughters Community Health and Rehabilitation Center in Staunton.
He was born on November 7, 1934, in Augusta County, to the late Richard Corbin Crawford and Ruth Annie Bell Ray Crawford.
Ezell carved out a successful career as a Maintenance Supervisor. He began his journey at Westinghouse and Reid's Store, later moving on to work for Western State Hospital. After relocating to Maryland, he continued his commitment to maintenance work at the Jewish synagogue and a senior complex in Glen Burnie, MD. His diligence and work ethic earned him the respect of his colleagues and those he served.
Ezell was not only known for his professional life but also for his vibrant spirit and passion for life. A longstanding member of Mount Bethel Baptist Church in Fort Defiance, he was also one of the original members of the Crawford Brothers Quartet, sharing his love for music with others. In his free time, he enjoyed playing bingo, visiting casinos, and taking his cherished dog, Angel, for rides to the park.
Ezell is survived by his sons, Roger Lee Crawford, Beverly Wayne Crawford, Ezell Alphonso Crawford, Jr., and Gene Rodney Crawford; his daughters, Linda Crawford Blakey, Deborah Ann Crawford, and Mary Ann Robinson; his brothers, Percell James Crawford, Owen Layton Crawford, and Robert Vern Crawford; his sister, Jannielette Naomi Crawford Woodson. He is also survived by his first wife, Hattie Crawford Kelly, twenty-three grandchildren, thirty-one great-grandchildren, and nine great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brothers, Howard Nathaniel Crawford, Sr., Franklin Dea Crawford, Richard David Crawford, Sr., John Alfred Crawford, and Corbin "Bucky" Luddle Crawford; as well as his sisters, Ruth Shirley Crawford Woodson and Elizabeth Virginia Crawford Stewart; and his four granddaughters, Sonia Crawford, Lelia Moats, Aaliyah James, and Jyrney Crawford.
A memorial service will be held at 1:00 PM on Friday, March 28, 2025 at Henry Funeral Home in Staunton with Pastor Conchita Holtz officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, beginning at 12:00 PM.
