FRANKLIN P. THACKER, SR. STAUNTON, VA Franklin Paul Thacker, Sr., 97, widower of Hazel Elizabeth (Kite) Thacker, of 910 Preston Drive, died Sunday, November 3, 2013, at his residence. He was born October 5, 1916, in Rockingham County, a son of the late Samuel E. and Mollie Belle (Gilkerson) Thacker. He was educated in Augusta County schools and graduated from North River High School in 1934. Mr. Thacker served in the 264th Combat Engineers for four years in the European Theater. Mr. Thacker married Hazel E. Kite Louderback on April 4, 1944. He resided in Bridgewater, Alexandria, and most recently in Staunton. Prior to retirement, he worked for Peoples Life Insurance Company for 40 years. He was a member of Mossy Creek Presbyterian Church during his youth. He was also a member of Bethany Presbyterian Church for 51 years during which time he served as a Deacon, Elder, and Church Treasurer. Paul got great enjoyment out of sports, especially playing golf. In addition to his wife of 68 years, he was also preceded in death by a daughter, Sandra Southard; a brother; and four sisters. Family members include a son, Frank Thacker of Staunton; a son-in-law, Oliver Southard of Harrisonburg; a brother, George L. Thacker of Churchville; a sister, Margaret "Peg" Knicely of Bridgewater; three grandchildren, Douglas Thacker, Bryan Southard, and Teresa Southard; a great grandson, Josh; and many nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be conducted at 12 noon on Saturday, November 9, 2013, in Bethany Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Lester LaPrade. The family will receive friends prior to the service. Interment will be private at Mossy Creek Presbyterian Church Cemetery. Henry Funeral Home is handling the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Bethany Presbyterian Church, 2501 Fifth Street, Staunton, VA 24401.
