Gene Robert Weller, 88, entered the gates of heaven on Wednesday, December 18, 2024.
He was born on February 16, 1936, in Verona, the youngest of three sons, to the late Walton “Pop” Milton and Carrie Virginia Aldhizer Weller.
Gene's career spanned several decades, beginning with his education at Mt. Sidney Elementary School and culminating in his graduation from Middle River High School in 1954. Following his passion for engineering, he became employed by the Virginia Highway Department and subsequently worked at Johnson & Williams as a consulting engineer and surveyor. For forty-four years, Gene served as a construction superintendent for Aaron J. Conner, a general contractor in Roanoke, Virginia. His expertise was evident in the laying of water and sewer pipelines throughout Augusta and Rockingham counties, as well as in the cities of Staunton, Waynesboro, and Harrisonburg.
In addition to his professional accomplishments, Gene proudly served his country in the US Army from 1959 to 1962. His dedication to service continued beyond his military duty, manifesting in a lifelong commitment to scouting. Gene's passion for mentoring young people was evident through his roles as an Assistant Scout Master and Cub Master for various troops and as a Scout Master for fifty years, including thirty-four years for Troop 13 at Bethel Presbyterian Church. His influence extended beyond the troops, enriching the lives of countless scouts over the years.
Active in his community, Gene was a valued member of the American Legion Post #13 Staunton, and participated in various committees at Calvary United Methodist Church in Stuarts Draft, where he was also a member of the Men's Club and engaged in the Bible Journey Sunday school class.
He is survived by his loving wife of fifty-nine years, Janet Fay Floyd Weller; his sons, Patrick Walton Weller and his wife, Heather, and Robert Scott Weller; his brother, George Walton Weller; his grandchildren, Jackson, Harrison, Jamison and Ellison Weller; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brother, Ralph “Tom” Webster Weller.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM on Sunday, December 22, 2024, at Calvary United Methodist Church with the Reverend David Vaughan officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, beginning at 1:00 PM.
