Gerald “Jake" Dunsmore, 81, of 506 Seawright Springs Road, Mount Sidney, died unexpectedly after a brief illness at his home on Saturday, November 5, 2022. He was born January 7, 1941, in Verona, a son of the late Leroy Gilbert and Fannie Shumate Dunsmore.

Jake was a lifelong resident of the Mt. Sidney/Verona community. After graduating from Middle River High School, he married his wife Jean Ellen (Stogdale) who preceded him in death. Jake was a mechanical technician at DuPont of Waynesboro and retired after 41 years of service. He was formerly an active member of the Verona Volunteer Fire Department, serving as both president and chief during his twenty-five years of service. During his retirement years, Jake stayed busy assisting his family and community. In addition he was also an active member of Bethany United Methodist Church, where he assisted Jean in starting the church food pantry. Jake was known for his positive spirit, good humor and love for children. He never met a stranger. Dearly loved as a loyal father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and dear friend, Pop will be greatly missed.

In addition to his wife, family members include a daughter and son-in-law, Gayle (Dunsmore) and Rory Gorman; a son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Jackie Dunsmore; five grandchildren, Aisling and Aidan Gorman, Bradley and wife Jordan, Katie and husband Captain Daniel Gaines, and Carrie Dunsmore; four great-grandsons, Wyatt, Hudson, and Sawyer Dunsmore, and William Gaines, as well as numerous nieces and nephews; and special friends, Don and Carole Landes.

He is survived by his brother, Howard and his wife Nancy Dunsmore.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Danny Dunsmore, and his sisters, Judy Alexander (Paul) and Evelyn VanPelt (Stuart).

His family will be celebrating his life at 3 p.m. on Thursday, November 10, 2022 at Jake’s home. Bring your lawn chair for the service that will be followed by food and fellowship in Jake’s memory. His family is receiving friends at the home of Mark and Jackie Dunsmore, 965 Keezletown Road, Weyers Cave, Tuesday and Wednesday from 5:30 PM to 8:00 PM.

Burial will be private at Oak Lawn Mausoleum and Memory Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to New Hope Weyers Cave Youth Sports Association, PO Box 466, New Hope, VA 24469, or to Bethany United Methodist Church, 3700 Lee Highway, Weyers Cave, VA 24486.
