Gloria Lee Alphin Flournoy, 85, of Staunton, a beloved matriarch and compassionate caregiver, passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 3, 2025, at Augusta Health in Fishersville. She leaves behind a rich legacy of love and service.

Born in Lynchburg on April 14, 1939, to the late Henry Arthur and Ruth Elizabeth Lee Alphin, Gloria journeyed through life with an indomitable spirit and an unwavering commitment to helping others.

Her professional journey began with her education as a 1957 graduate of Lexington High School. From there, she attended Madison College in Harrisonburg, followed by her graduation from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, where she proudly became a member of the first class that accepted women. Armed with her degree, Gloria embarked on a decades-long career as a registered nurse. With immense dedication, she began her career at Lynchburg Baptist Hospital, where she ran the Emergency Department, followed by her work at Danville Medical Center, and then she later devoted herself to overseeing the nursery at King’s Daughters Hospital in Staunton, where she nurtured countless new lives and ensuring their beginnings were greeted with care.

Beyond her career, Gloria embraced the joys of life with fervor. She was a vibrant soul who found pleasure in the game of bridge and in traveling with her husband, William C. Flournoy, and her family. Together, they created wonderful and lasting memories. Even more central to her existence was her family - her heart overflowed with love for her children, grandchildren, and great-granddaughter. As a mother, wife, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Gloria extended her warmth and kindness, always ready to support her loved ones at a moment’s notice. Her selfless nature shone brightly as she cared for neighbors and friends alike, often ensuring their needs were met with a loving heart, preparing meals, driving them to appointments, or simply checking in with words of encouragement.

She was also a devoted member of Hope Community Church in Waynesboro and for many years was a member of the Staunton Lions Club and the Staunton Jaycees.

In addition to her devoted husband, she is survived by her beloved daughter, Suzanne Rochet Flournoy Cappuzzo and her husband, Dino Paul; her grandsons, Michael Arthur and Nicholas Paul Cappuzzo; and her great-granddaughter, Ellie Grace.

A graveside service will be conducted at 2:00 PM on Thursday, April 10, 2025, at Oak Grove Cemetery in Lexington.
