Helen Marie Houser Persinger, 89, passed away on Monday, April 14, 2025, at Blue Ridge Christian Homes in Raphine.
She was born on March 18, 1936, in Augusta County to the late Guy Wilton and Edith Pearl Blackwell Houser.
Helen was a remarkable woman whose life was a testament to hard work, dedication, and love for her family and community.
Throughout her life, Helen exemplified an unwavering work ethic. She and her husband worked tirelessly as dairy farmers, a commitment that required them to rise early each day to milk their cows twice daily. In addition to her responsibilities on the farm, she also made a significant contribution to the community by driving a school bus for Augusta County Schools.
Helen was not only known for her dedication to her work but also for her nurturing nature. She was a devoted mother, selflessly attending to the needs of her husband and her boys. Helen was particularly famous for her fried chicken, which was often considered the best chicken you’d ever eat.
Beyond her work and family life, Helen was actively involved in her church, particularly with the women’s church group at Old Providence ARP Church. She will most be remembered as someone that was always ready to lend a hand to those in need and demonstrated compassion and generosity in every interaction.
She is survived by her sons, Duane Alfred Persinger and his significant other, Peggy, and David Erskine Persinger and his wife, Stacie; her grandsons, Cody Duane, Kooper, and Andrew Persinger; her granddaughters; Brooke and Samantha Persinger; her nine great-grandchildren; and her sister, Elaine Taylor.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Alfred Watson Persinger III; her daughter-in-law, Fonda; and her brothers, Lyle Wilton, Erskine Lee, and Ralph Lewis Houser.
A graveside service will be held at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, April 22, 2025, at Old Providence ARP Church Cemetery in Spottswood with Pastor Patrick Malphrus officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, beginning at 1:00 PM in the church's fellowship hall.
The family would like to thank the staff at Blue Ridge Christian Homes as well as the nurses and staff of Dr. Marsh's office for all the care, support, and compassion Helen received.
Memorial contributions may be made to Old Providence ARP Church (1005 Spottswood Road, Spottswood, VA 24476).
