Jay Summers Thomas, 81, of Fishersville, passed away peacefully Monday afternoon, October 7, 2024, at The Retreat at Fishersville. 

He was born with his twin brother, Ray Winters, on February 2, 1943 in Mount Sidney, to the late Hugh Sr. and Virginia "Virgie" Swortzel Hanger.

During his life, he graduated from Wilson Memorial High School in 1961, working on the family farm and at E.I. DuPont until he was drafted into the U.S. Army in November 1963. He served two tours in Vietnam with distinction, being awarded the Good Conduct medal, Bronze Star, Purple Heart and Silver Star. Upon honorable discharge, he returned home and returned to work. Later, he obtained a contractor license and began his career in construction which lasted more than thirty years. During that time, he enjoyed his hobby as a cabinet maker in his shop and spending precious time with his children and grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, Jay was preceded in death by his loving wife, Leona Webb Booker Thomas; his brothers, Hugh Jr., James "Jim" Harper, and Ray Winters; his sister, Mary Lee Thomas Landes; and his nephews, Donnie Landes and Gary Landes.

He is survived by his son, Robert Hugh Thomas and his wife, Tori Jenkins; his daughter, Dana Thomas Boyers and her husband, Randy; his grandchildren, Brik, Ryker, and Rigney Thomas; his step-grandson, Dakota Boyers; his nephew, Phillip Thomas; his nieces, Gloria Smith Landes, Sandy Heinrich, Christina Thomas Reddish, and Renee Thomas Dorsey; his great-nephews, Neil Landes and Michael Landes; his great-nieces, Sara Landes and Mary Landes Craig; and many more special cousins; and his extended family. 

The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM  - 8:00 PM on Saturday, October 12, 2024, at Henry Funeral Home in Staunton.

A celebration of life will be held at 1:00 PM on Sunday, October 13, 2024, at Tinkling Spring Presbyterian Church in Fishersville with the Reverend Merle Fisher officiating. 

Interment will follow in the church cemetery where military honors will be rendered.

The family requests memorial contributions be made to the contributors favorite charities.
