John Thomas Hooton

John Thomas Hooton, 69, a long-time resident of Goshen, passed away Sunday, July 16, 2023 at Carillion Roanoke Memorial Hospital after a brave two and a half year battle with cancer.

He was born on May 8, 1954, in Staunton, to the late John Ronald and Emily Cornelia Armstrong Hooton. He grew up in Deerfield where his family owned and operated Hooton’s Grocery.

John worked at Stillwater for twenty-seven years, Walmart for thirteen years, and at VMI Dining Services until his health failed.

He will be remembered for his quiet and sweet nature, always looking for the best in others and the bright side of life.

He is survived by his family whom he loved dearly: a son, John E. Hooton and Amy Brown; his daughter of the heart, Jennifer Sweet and Steven Campbell; and a granddaughter, Edith. He will be profoundly missed by his sister, Kay White and her husband, Michael. Charlie, his cat, gave him great comfort and devotion during Covid isolation and during his cancer treatment.

The family would like to thank all who were kind during his journey, especially his best friends, Justin Garrett and Jennifer for their help and support.

On his final day, his family was able to gather around him, sharing stories and memories. He was able to respond and knew how much he was loved. Jennifer, Steven, and Edith were able to remain with him until his peaceful passing.

There will be no formal services or visitation.

Following cremation, he will be laid to rest beside his parents at Greenhill Cemetery in Churchville.

It is suggested that those desiring may make memorial contributions to Goshen First Aid (9770 Maury River Road, Goshen, Virginia 24439).
