John Leonard Moorehead, 60, peacefully passed away on Tuesday, June 4, 2024, at King’s Daughters Community Health and Rehabilitation Center in Staunton, where he was a resident for the last three years.
John was named after his two uncles John and Leonard Moorhead. He was born on December 7, 1963, in Portsmouth to the late Donald Frederick and Marion Virginia Gardei Moorehead.
John, a devoted patriot, had a deep love for his country, a passion instilled in him by his father and brother, both proud veterans of the US Navy. He held his family's tradition of military service in the highest regard and lived his life with the same sense of duty and honor.
John spent his professional life working in transportation. During his career he worked for Beach Taxi - The Yellow Cab, where his passion for transportation began. His expertise led him to working for AAA as a trucking company dispatcher, further solidifying his love of the industry.
Beyond his career, John was known for his infectious personality and ability to bring joy to those around him. A true fun-loving soul, he had an incredible talent for always lifting spirits and putting a smile on people’s faces. His knack for cracking jokes ensured there was never a dull moment.
In his free time, John had a love for reading and could often be found indulging in a good book. He enjoyed supporting the Dallas Cowboys, eating pizza, drinking Pepsi and watching old classic sitcoms, often quoting lines from his favorite shows.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his ex-wife, Donna Wainwright, who he married in 1991 and divorced 20 years later, remaining very close friends. He is also survived by his two sisters, Susan Lynn Moorehead Newbern, of Livingston, Texas and Patricia Ann Moorehead Ashley, of Edenton, North Carolina, and his brother, Donald Frederick Moorehead, Jr. of Chesapeake, Virginia.
The family is grateful for all the loving care and support he received from King’s Daughters Community Health and Rehabilitation Center over the last several years. They’d also like to thank UVA Dialysis and their expert care during his time of illness.
John will be remembered for his unwavering pride in his country, his dedication to family and generous spirit. He will be sorely missed by many, but rejoice in his renewed life with his Lord and Savior.
