JOHN D. NEWLEN STAUNTON, VA John Dewitt Newlen, 99, widower of Monna Belle (Hevener) Newlen, of Staunton, passed away Tuesday, November 10, 2015, at King's Daughters' Rehab. He was born November 24, 1915, in Highland County, a son of the late Paul Lester and Lula Belle (Grogg) Newlen. He was a finished carpenter and built many houses in Staunton. He also ran Bells Diner on West Beverley Street. He was a member of Marquis Memorial United Methodist Church. In addition to his wife, he was also preceded in death by six brothers, Lacy, Gene, Charles, Robert, Bryan and Ralph, who was killed in service in 1944; and a sister, Emma. Family members include a son Ralph D. Newlen; three sisters, Geneve Hevener and Helen Johnson of Staunton and Katherine of Maryland; and a number of nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Monday, November 16, 2015 in Thornrose Cemetery. Henry Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
