Laymon Franklin Mowery, 74, of Staunton, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 21, 2023, at Augusta Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Fishersville.

He was born in Woodstock to the late Gaylon Franklin Mowery and Velma Catherine Stepp Mowery-Painter on August 20, 1948.

Laymon grew up in Virginia’s picturesque countryside. A man of many talents, he proudly served the country during the Vietnam War in the United States Army. Following his military service, Laymon went on to enjoy a fruitful and fulfilling career. He owned L & M Photography in Shenandoah County for many years. He later retired from Perry Judd's, Inc., in Strasburg where he was employed for over twenty years. He finally retired from Shenandoah County Public Schools as head custodian.

Laymon was passionate about life and lived it with great enthusiasm. When he was not working or spending time with his family, he could be found indulging in one of his favorite hobbies – hunting or fishing. His love for nature was unparalleled; he found solace in being outdoors and had an innate connection with it – nowhere else was this more exemplified than in his role as a gentleman farmer. He loved to work the soil and see the fruits of his labor at the time of harvest and amongst the farm animals he raised. He especially cherished his beloved dog, Rusty.

He is survived by his loving wife, Susan Moyer Mowery; his two sons, William Franklin Mowery and his wife, Angelia of Crestview, FL and Christopher Wayne Mowery of Saumsville, VA; his three grandchildren, Kristina Mowery Johnson, William Harrison Mowery, Peyton Harless; and three great-grandchildren.

A private graveside service with military rites for family and close friends will be held at Thornrose Cemetery.

Laymon has left an indelible mark on the hearts of everyone who knew him. He will always be remembered for his kindness, generosity, infectious laughter, warm smile, and larger-than-life personality that knew no bounds. His contributions have made this world a better place, and his absence will be felt for years to come.
