Linda Riley Hickey, 72, of Staunton, a lifelong educator, went to be with her Heavenly Father on Tuesday, January 23, 2024, at her residence.
She was born on January 28, 1951, in Staunton to the late John William (J.W.) Riley Jr. and Edith Young Huffer Riley.
Linda graduated from Buffalo Gap High School in 1969 and with a degree in education from James Madison University in 1973. Post graduation, she embarked on a 40-year, distinguished teaching career in mathematical education. She taught geometry, algebra, and trigonometry in the City of Staunton and Augusta County School Systems. She earned a master's in education from the University of Virginia, offering her the opportunity to venture into administration overseeing the Augusta County School’s cafeteria system. In 2005, an opportunity arose for Linda to transition to the Training and Technical Assistance Centers (T/TACs) through the Virginia Department of Education and James Madison University to support educators who serve students with disabilities. Bringing her passion and expertise in mathematics to the position, Linda developed curricula, and trained teachers on effective instructional strategies. She retired from education in 2013.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, David Randell Hickey; her son, William Scott Hickey; and her brother, John Blair Riley.
Linda is survived by her son, Matthew Hickey (Stacie); her two grandsons, Scott Michael Hickey and Garrett David Hickey; her brother, Doug Riley (Donna); and a niece, Rosalea Riley Potter (Chaz) and nephew, Jonathan Riley (Sandra) and their families.
Throughout her educational career, she developed many lifelong friendships over the years. The family has asked many of those individuals and their spouses to be part of her celebration of life services.
Active pallbearers are Doug Riley, Jonathan Riley, Ed Young, Phil Galvin, Charlie Drumheller, Kin Yancey, Jack Taylor, Scott Garber, and Bo Flint.
