Lorenza Garces Herrada

Lorenza Maria Garces Herrada passed away at her home at The Legacy at North Augusta on
Thursday, November 17, 2022 at the age of 93.

Maria, as she was known to her friends, was a kind and selfless person who always put the
wellbeing of others before herself. She loved gathering with family and friends, especially to play
canasta or dominoes. She loved cooking and was an accomplished cook. She taught all her
family the culinary arts and left them many traditional recipes to enjoy and pass on to future
generations. She also enjoyed embroidery, classical music, reading and was also a MLB
baseball fan.

Maria goes to join her loving husband of 68 years Miguel Angel Garces and her parents Juan
Abelardo Herrada Herrera MD and Maria Manuela Vazquez.

Maria’s cooking and love of family will be missed by her son, Miguel A. Garces IV and wife
Patricia (Haycock) Garces of Lewes Delaware and their children Miguel A. Garces V, Erin
Adragna (Garces) and Heather Csik (Garces); her daughter Alicia Garces Roberts and her
husband Wesley of Staunton and their children Alicia Roberts Bowens and Morgan Roberts
Harrison; her son Juan Manuel Garces of Levittown, Pennsylvania and his wife Marketta (Stoy)
Garces and their son Juan Manuel Garces II. She was also blessed with 4 great-grandchildren
Tyler Roberts, Charlotte Harrison, Adriana Adragna and Frank Adrgna IV.; and an extended
family of cousins, nieces and nephews, and their families.

Maria was born in Minas, Camaguey, Cuba. She attended St. Teresa of Avila School in
Camaguey. She married Miguel in 1953 and had 3 children. She emigrated from Cuba to the
United States with her family in 1962 to escape communist oppression. She worked for many
years as a lab assistant in The College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences (CAES) at
Rutgers University. Maria and Miguel started their own farm in Montgomery NJ where they
raised Polled Hereford cattle. Upon Miguel’s retirement, they moved to a much larger farm in
Staunton, Virginia where they continued to raise cattle. When they retired from farming they
moved to Miami Beach, where they spent many years enjoying the extended family and the
Cuban community. In their mid-80s they returned to Staunton to be closer to family and lived for
several years at The Legacy at North Augusta.

The family is grateful for the care and attention provided by the staff of The Legacy as well as
the continuing support and excellent care provided by Legacy Hospice.

A mass will be held in her memory at St. Francis Roman Catholic Church in Staunton on
