Mabel V. Snyder

Mabel Geraldine Varner Snyder, 91, of Staunton, passed away on Thursday, October 16, 2024, at Augusta Health in Fishersville. 

Born in Mustoe on November 28, 1932, to the late Arthur Clarence Varner and Elsie Lucille Corbett Varner, she will be remembered as a devoted mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend.

An avid and dedicated bowler, Mabel’s skills were legendary in the Shenandoah Valley. Her talent on the lanes earned her a well-deserved place as a 2012 inductee into the Shenandoah Valley Bowling Hall of Fame. Whether in casual leagues or competitive tournaments, Mabel’s precision, skill, and sportsmanship made her a standout. Mabel’s love for sports extended beyond bowling, as she was an enthusiastic fan of both NBA and college basketball, whether she was cheering on her favorite teams or engaging in conversation about the latest games.

Beyond her passion for sports, Mabel had an adventurous and vibrant spirit that took her on many trips to Pigeon Forge, a favorite getaway where she indulged in scenic views, good company, and all the fun attractions.

Her spiritual life was equally as important to her. A devoted member of Christ United Methodist Church in Staunton, Mabel’s faith was her guiding light. Her church family meant the world to her, and she was deeply involved in the church’s activities. Her close friendship with Reverend Madison Ailinger was one of mutual love and care, and Mabel’s presence at Sunday services and events was always a highlight for those around her. Her steadfast faith and love for her church family were pillars in her life. 

Mabel had a lifelong work ethic and took pride in her career, retiring at seventy-six from the sales department at Staunton Foods.

Even in her leisure time, Mabel’s love for life never wavered. A devoted fan of country music, she spent many evenings attending music festivals and concerts. She embraced life with enthusiasm, leaving behind a legacy of friendship, warmth, and passion for all that she did.

She is survived by her beloved daughter, Rhonda Manuel and her husband, Gary; her grandson, Danny Manuel and his wife, Elly; her great-granddaughter, Carmella Manuel; her sister, Velda Smith; along with several special and caring nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her loving husband, Tunney Richard Snyder; her brothers, James "Jimmy" Franklin and William Arthur Varner; and her sister, Judith Madeline King.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM on Friday, October 18, 2024, at Henry Funeral Home in Staunton. 

A funeral service will be conducted at 1:00 PM on Saturday, October 19, 2024, in the funeral home chapel.

Interment will follow at Oak Lawn Mausoleum and Memory Gardens in Staunton.
