Mary Evelyn Reed Brooks, 94, of Staunton, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 25, 2024, at her daughter’s residence.
Born on April 24, 1930, in Staunton, to the late Evelyn Louise Kite Reed and Russell Roscoe Reed. Mary was reared by her mother and stepfather, the late Mac McGann. Mary lived a life filled with love and creativity.
Known for her incredible cooking skills, Mary had a knack for creating dishes that brought family and friends together. Her talents in the kitchen were rivaled only be her unique sense of fashion. Habitually barefoot, she has a particular fondness for stylish shoes and purses.
Her creativity was highlighted by her cross-stitched renditions of P. Buckley Moss’s paintings and her husband’s beloved, “Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain.” She also loved reading, fishing, and Gone with the Wind memorabilia.
Mary was also known for her vibrant personality and her warmth, making everyone feel at home in her presence. Her hospitable nature created a welcoming atmosphere for all who visited her. Additionally, she held a special place in her heart for the Washington Redskins, showcasing her enthusiasm for football and college basketball – especially the March Madness NCAA Tournament.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband, William “Randy” Brooks.
She is survived by her son, John Randolph Brooks and his wife, Judith Owens; her daughter, Katherine Louise Brooks Martin; her grandchildren, Candace Starr Martin, Amber Nicole Brooks, and Joshua John Brooks; her sister, Margaret Delois Reed Robertson; and her nieces, Penny Buechter and Cindy Robertson. Mary's bond with her family exemplified what it meant to be loving and supportive, and her presence will be deeply missed by them all.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM on Thursday, October 3, 2024, at St. Paul's Church in Staunton with the Reverend Russell Heinrich officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, beginning at 1:00 PM.
