NANCY D. ALTIZER STAUNTON, VA Nancy Elizabeth Davis Altizer, wife of Thomas W. Altizer of Staunton, passed away on Thursday, September 22, 2011, at Augusta Health following a long and courageous battle with Parkinson's Disease. Nancy was born in Elk Ridge, WV, on June 24, 1932 to Dr. William Browning Davis and Elizabeth Karnes Davis. She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Tom, and their three children, Dr. James W. Altizer of Charlotte, NC, Stephen B. Altizer and wife, Anne, of Alexandria, VA, Elizabeth A. Altizer of Falls Church, VA; and four grandchildren, Tom and Jennifer, children of James and Patricia, and Browning and Andrew, sons of Stephen and Anne. She is also survived by her younger brother, Dr. James K. Davis and his wife, Nancy, of Newport News, VA. Her older brother, Dr. William Browning Davis, Jr., preceded her in death. Nancy attended Hollins College for two years and was graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She later received a Nursing degree from Morris Harvey College, now the University of Charleston (WV). She worked for a number of years at Charleston Memorial Hospital and at King's Daughters' and Waynesboro Community Hospital after moving to Staunton in 1970. After retiring, Nancy volunteered for many years with the hospital auxiliary and the American Red Cross Bloodmobile. She enjoyed golf, tennis, playing bridge, classical music, reading, and ACC basketball. A memorial service will be held at Covenant Presbyterian Church at 2001 North Coalter Street in Staunton at 2 p.m. Monday, September 26, 2011, followed by a reception in the Fellowship Hall. The family would like to thank the following caregivers for their loving and faithful service, Chrystal Halterman, Rosa Blakey, Lisa Crawford, Nina Fultz, Sue Shiflet, and June Cline. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to Covenant Presbyterian Church or to Hospice of the Shenandoah, 64 Sports Medicine Drive, Fishersville, VA 22939.
