Nell Butler Crist, 94, of Staunton, passed away on Thursday, September 19, 2024, at the Augusta Health Shenandoah Hospice House in Fishersville with her daughter by her side.
She was born on May 9, 1930, in Nelson County to the late Edward Franklin Butler and Thelma Dell Bibb Butler Morris.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband of forty-nine years, Waller Fortune Crist; her beautiful granddaughter, Kimberly "Kim" Denise Stacy Sipe; her brothers, Sergeant First Class William Edward Butler and George Madison Morris; her sister, Elizabeth Ann Morris Stinnett; and her son-in-law, Myrl Cleveland Vest.
Left to cherish her memory is her beloved daughter, Vicky Leigh Crist Vest of Staunton; a special sister-in-law, Margaret Butler of Staunton; and her brother-in-law, Harold Stinnett of Fairmont Crossing Health and Rehabilitation Center in Amherst.
Nell was a devoted member of Memorial Baptist Church in Staunton. She loved music and enjoyed cooking. In her earlier years, she taught Sunday School, Bible School, sang in the church choir, and served on the Lord's Supper Committee. For a number of years, Nell worked as a babysitter and also taught at the Staunton Area Association for Retarded Children.
A funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, September 24, 2024, at Henry Funeral Home in Staunton with Pastor Todd Latham officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, beginning at 1:00 PM.
Interment will follow at Oak Lawn Mausoleum and Memory Gardens in Staunton.
Serving as pallbearers will be Jeff Eckard, Justin Eckard, Jeremiah Eckard, Larry Evans, Steve Shorter, and Chris Wilkerson.
It is suggested that those desiring may make memorial contributions to Memorial Baptist Church (224 Taylor Street, Staunton, VA 24401) or to the Bethel Church of the Brethren's Cemetery Fund (1921 Variety Mills Road, Arrington, VA 22922).
