Norma Jean Houff Shoemaker, 93, widow of Donald Lee Shoemaker, Sr., passed away on Tuesday, January 7, 2025, at her residence in Staunton.
She was born on August 31, 1931, in Weyers Cave to the late Francis Harvey Houff and Ruth Elizabeth Roadcap.
Norma graduated from Wilson Memorial High School in 1949. She attended Dunsmore Business College and then went on to work in the automative industry for over thirty years. Norma later retired from Belk Department Store in Staunton working as a retail associate. Norma then went on to care for her husband for ten years after he suffered a stroke, who passed away on October 20, 2018.
In addition to her career, Norma was a member of the Staunton Church of the Brethren where she and her husband were very active. She was a member of the senior citizen’s group of the Sunshine Class and Women’s Fellowship. She was also a member of the Pin Traders Club of Virginia and was also deeply involved in the Augusta Lions Club for thirty-five years. Her commitment to service did not go unnoticed, in May of 2022 she proudly served as District Governor of Lions International, a role that exemplified her natural aptitude for leadership.
She is survived by her son, Donald Lee Shoemaker, Jr. and his wife, Nancy of Middlebrook; her grandchildren, John Nuckolls, Jr., Joshua Lee Nuckolls and his wife, Katie, and Devon Shoemaker; her great-grandchildren, Morgan, Braydon, Sadie and Jase; her great-great grandchild, Malaysia; her brother-in-law, Kenneth Shoemaker and his wife, Carol; and her special friends, Robin, Sandy, Kathy, Lisa and Nancy.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her daughter, Jean Elizabeth Shoemaker.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 1:00 PM on Tuesday, January 14, 2025, at the Staunton Church of the Brethren with Pastor Beth Jarrett officiating.
The family will receive friends immediately following in the fellowship hall.
The interment will be private at Edgewood Cemetery in Mt. Meridian, Virginia.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Augusta Health Hospice of the Shenandoah (c/o Augusta Health Foundation, P.O. Box 1000 Fishersville, VA).
