It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Raymond Joseph Rene Carbonneau, 80, on Thursday, January 2, 2025, at the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville, after a courageous battle with cancer.
He was born in Lewiston, Maine, on August 4, 1944, to the late Joseph Eusebe Carbonneau and Marianna Cote Carbonneau.
Ray is survived by his devoted wife of nearly 57 years, Jane Idorna Carbonneau; their beloved son, Derek Rene Carbonneau, and his wife, Heather; and his cherished grandchildren, Noelle Marie Carbonneau and Adam Masters Carbonneau. He is also survived by his half-sister, Carmen Carbonneau LaChapelle.
In his early years Ray helped out in his parent's store in Poland Springs, Maine, and played ice hockey. He attended St. Dominic’s High School in Lewiston. After high school, he attended Wentworth Academy of Technology in Boston, Massachusetts, where he studied electrical engineering.
A proud veteran, Ray served his country in the United States Army as a technician, both domestically and abroad. He carried with him the discipline and work ethic instilled during his time in service, values that shaped his life and career.
After completing his military service, Ray began a successful career in sales and finance, starting with General Motors Acceptance Corporation (GMAC). He went on to hold various roles throughout his career, spending the majority of his professional life with Koons of Manassas, a prominent Northern Virginia auto dealership, where he was respected for the strong relationships he built with clients and his colleagues.
In retirement, Ray and Jane moved to Barboursville, Virginia, to be closer to their son and his family, where Ray continued to pursue his many talents, especially woodworking and home improvement. He was a gifted craftsman, designing and building a stunning sunroom addition, stone walls, a patio, handmade furniture, and countless other projects - all with Jane by his side. In 2020, they relocated to Waynesboro, and built close friendships with their new neighbors.
Ray had a deep love for sports. He and Jane could often be found cheering for their favorite teams: the Washington Commanders, Washington Capitals, and Washington Nationals. Ray also loved spending time with family - sharing stories, delicious meals, and making memories that will be cherished forever.
The family will be having a Celebration of Life from 2:00 - 4:00 PM on Sunday, January 26, 2025, at Henry Funeral Home in Staunton, where friends and family are welcome. The service will be streamed live on the Henry Funeral Home Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/HenryFuneral)
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the National Pancreatic Cancer Foundation (PO Box 750046, Atlanta, GA 30374) in his name.
