ROBERT S. STEWART FISHERSVILLE - Mr. Robert Sherwood Stewart, 87, husband of Helen (Schnell) Stewart of Fishersville went to be with the Lord on Saturday evening (September 24, 2011) at his home. He was born April 29, 1924 in Parker, Pennsylvania, son of the late Harland and Mae (Wood) Stewart. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He was a member and past Deacon of Staunton OPC Church. Mr. Stewart was a WWII Navy veteran having served on a Destroyer Escort (USS Kyne) in the Pacific. He served on Halsey's task force and participated in the last eight major engagements of the war, from Palau up to the entry into Japan. His ship was among the first to enter Tokyo Bay when Japan surrendered. After completing military service, he graduated as an Electrical Engineer from the Milwaukee School of Engineering. His career included work at Elliot Co., Westinghouse Air Conditioning in Staunton, Sundstrand Compressors, and Carrier Air Conditioning in Syracuse, NY. He has served on code-making panels for the air conditioning industry and Underwriters Laboratories. He served as Chairman of the Blue Ridge Subsection of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers. He holds seven U. S. Patents. Survivors include his wife, Helen; two sons and daughter-in-law, Jeffrey and Donna Stewart of Staunton and David Stewart of Fountain Hills, AZ; and five grandchildren, Joshua, Michelle, Shaye, Cameron, and Anjelica Stewart. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday (September 28, 2011) in the Henry Funeral Home Chapel by Pastor Ethan Allison. Interment will follow in Oak Lawn. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday (September 27, 2011) at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Staunton OPC Church, 2408 Hickory Street, Staunton,VA 24401.
