Rosalind Elizabeth Holt, 67, wife of Craig A. Holt, died at home on Saturday, August 5, 2023, with her family close by. She was born in Quincy, Illinois on March 20, 1956, a daughter of the late DeWayne Loren Brickman and Rosalind “Big Roz” Brickman, a descendent of a long string of tough, mid-western farm women.
She is survived by her daughter, Kathrine Marie Holt (Ben Banyas) and her son, Benjamin Brickman Holt (Emily Brock Holt); her sister Rachel (Wes) and dear cousin, Deb. She helped take care of her brother James before he died. She is especially survived by her grandson, Henry Brickman Holt.
Roz landed in Staunton on John Lewis Settler’s Day, 1980, with a husband and not much else. She threw down roots, enrolled in community college and became a registered nurse. King’s Daughter’s Hospital hired her straight out of school, and she spent the next 39 years in devoted service to the Hospital.
She taught cardiopulmonary resuscitation to about a million people.
Her family would tell you that she was a zealous Boy Scout Leader, that she escorted the first patient to transfer to the new Hospital, and that she spent countless hours helping the nervous or the over-confident to pass the needed certifications for their job. She was a loyal friend and intensely proud of her family. Roz was married for exactly 45 years.
She taught adult Sunday School to both Presbyterians and Southern Baptists.
Sometime after her children were safely gone, Roz discovered Birds in her backyard, which inevitably led from an innocent, harmless hobby to a serious obsession. She visited many questionable, bug-infested, muddy swamps over the next decade, from Mexico to Canada. She was a member of the Augusta Bird Club and supported their programs. In lieu of flowers, Roz would appreciate if you could do something nice for a bird, as she knew most of them.
May God bless Hospice of the Shenandoah.
A memorial service will be held on August 26, 2023 at 1:00 pm at Memorial Baptist Church with the Reverend Todd Latham officiating.
