Ruth R. Shorter

Ruth Riggins Shorter, 98, passed away peacefully at her residence in Staunton on Friday, December 1, 2023.

She was born on October 26, 1925, in Wythe County to the late Haswell Odell and Emma Rosa Fulton Riggins.

Ruth was a former member of the Staunton Pentecostal Holiness Church. She also had a passion for motorcycles and was proud to be a member of the Augusta Motorcycle Club alongside her late husband.  She was an avid bowler who found great pleasure in the friendly competition and camaraderie on the lanes. She also loved to go square dancing.

Ruth is survived by her son, Steven Jesse Shorter; her sister, Lucy Mae Riggins Humphrey; her son-in-law, Ernest Prater; her grandchildren, Steven Edward Prater and Sarah Louise McLaughlin and her husband, Richard and Tyler Jesse Shorter and his wife, Amber, both of Georgia; her great-grandchildren, Olivia Dawn, Allie, and Ronan McLaughlin and Maci Shorter; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and her loving husband of sixty-eight years, Jesse Tyler Shorter, she is preceded in death by her daughter, Bonnie Rose Shorter Prater; her brother, Malcom Haswell Riggins; her sister, Helen Riggins Underwood; and her daughter-in-law, Claire Louise Shorter.

A private service will be announced at a later date.
