Vincent J. DeSarno Sr.

Vincent John DeSarno, Sr., 81, passed away peacefully holding his wife’s hand on Thursday, March 14, 2024, at Augusta Health in Fishersville.

Born on May 23, 1942, to the late Ralph and Julia DeSarno of Forestville, MD where he spent most of his youth, he later traveled to Staunton, VA where he called home.

He was a letter carrier for the United States Post Office in Washington, D.C. for many years, and then became an owner of the Wayside Market, in Staunton for ten years. Later in his life, he delivered bread for Flowers Bakery, which he loved.  

A storyteller, he enjoyed spending time with his family and enjoyed travelling anywhere, detailing his experiences and joys of life.  A lover of the great outdoors, you would find him gardening, fishing, and boating as often as he could.   

He is survived by his wife, Peggy Ann McDonald DeSarno of fifty-five years; his sons, Vincent John DeSarno, Jr. of Staunton, and his wife, Amanda, and Mathew Lawrence DeSarno and his wife, Crystal; his daughter, Melissa Anne Callison and her husband, Jimmy of Staunton; his brothers, Ralph DeSarno and his wife, Evelyn and Dominic DeSarno and his wife, Linda; his sister, Rose DeSarno; five grandchildren, Benjamin Callison, Nathan DeSarno and his wife Lindsey, Andrew Callison, Hannah DeSarno, and Bradley DeSarno; and one great-granddaughter, Roselyn.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by two brothers, Danny and Johnny DeSarno, and a sister, Bridget DeSarno.

A graveside service will be held at 12:00 PM on Thursday, March 21, 2024, at Thornrose Cemetery in Staunton.  The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, beginning at 11:00 AM at Henry Funeral Home.

Serving as pallbearers will be Matthew DeSarno, Vincent DeSarno, Jr., Benjamin Callison, Andrew Callison, Nathan DeSarno, Bradley DeSarno, Ryan Shipe, and Jimmy Callison. Dave Ellinger will serve as an honorary pallbearer.
