Wayne Howard Davis was born December 21, 1950 to the late D’Earcy P. Davis, Jr. and Frances Davis of Harrisonburg. His life was shortened on September 3, 2016 by young-onset Alzheimer’s disease. Wayne is survived by Christy Moody Davis, his wife of 39 years. Immediate family includes three sons, Cameron and Andrew Davis of Staunton, and Corbin and wife Deborah Davis of Washington, D.C.; brother D’Earcy P. Davis III and sister-in-law Bettye Davis of Harrisonburg; sister-in-law Beth Moody of Salem; and mother-in-law Marion Moody of Roanoke. Wayne gracefully lived a life of humility and service as he dedicated himself to God, community, and family. He studied Bible, Religion, and Philosophy at Hampden-Sydney College and earned a M.Ed. in Counseling from JMU. He served as a missionary in Africa, director of social services at Boys Home in Covington, and Executive Director of Big Brothers Big Sisters in Roanoke. He ended his career at Augusta Health where he was often the face and voice of the hospital as Director of Communications and Executive Director of its community health foundation. Wayne gave his time and leadership to numerous community organizations, including United Way, Salvation Army, and the Rotary Club of Staunton. He was an elder at Covenant Presbyterian Church, taught adult Bible study, and volunteered at the Verona Community Food Pantry. Wayne will be remembered for his wonderful sense of humor, warm smile, Bible scholarship, and love for dogs, cowboy movies, Hawaiian shirts, and reggae music. A celebration of Wayne’s life, led by The Reverend John C. Peterson, will take place 11:00 A.M. Saturday, September 17th at Covenant Presbyterian Church in Staunton. Anyone wishing to honor Wayne might consider a donation to the Verona Community Food Pantry, P.O. Box 187, Verona, Virginia 24482, or the Pew Bible Fund at Covenant Presbyterian Church.
