William D. Garland

William Donnell Garland, 69, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, March 12, 2025. He was a devoted father, grandfather, and brother.

He was born on August 11, 1955, in Staunton, a son of the late William Percy, Jr. and Eula Mae Organ Garland.

William worked as a production worker with Aspen Tree Service for many years. Beyond his career, he was passionate about the upkeep and cleanliness of Ebenezer Baptist Church, contributing significantly to his congregation.

In his personal life, William enjoyed cooking and considered himself a chef at heart. He delighted in preparing meals for his family and friends, showcasing his love through his cooking skills. He also found joy in playing basketball and going for walks, often enjoying the simple pleasures of life.

He is survived by his children, Nicole McCarthy, William Donnell Garland II, and Amanda McCarthy, and his grandchildren, Grace McCarthy, Tyquasha Weaver, Kenya Irvin, Akil Jennings, and Kamal McCarthy. He is also survived by his sisters, Patricia Mae Garland Gray and Olivia Kay Garland Ross and her husband, Brian; his brother, Anthony "Poe" Smith and Denise; as well as his uncle, Samuel Organ and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his sisters, Terrie Lavelle Garland and Sylvia Jean Garland Breckenridge and her husband, Frank.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Monday, March 17, 2025, at Henry Funeral Home in Staunton.

A memorial service at the same location will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, March 18, 2025, with the Reverend Michael Turner of Ebenezer Baptist Church officiating.

An inurnment at Fairview Cemetery in Staunton will be conducted at a later date.
