William Edward Wood

Staunton, VA…   William Edward Wood, 85, widower of Joan (Dull) Wood, of Staunton, passed Sunday, September 25, 2016 at Augusta Health. He was born on June 29, 1931 in Kingsport, TN, the son of the late Joseph William and Anna (Cox) Wood. Mr. Wood was a graduate of Wilson Memorial High School and a veteran of the U.S. Army. He retired from Smith’s Transfer after 31 years of service.  He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, son, brother and uncle.  He enjoyed the great outdoors, hunting, fishing and gardening. He was an avid Staunton Braves fan, and a card playing enthusiast, especially Pinochle and Canasta. Surviving family members include a son, Mark E. Wood of Staunton; two daughters and sons-in-law, Joan and Larry W. Romaine of Earlysville, and Beth and Kurt L. Hildebrand of Richmond; four grandchildren, Aaron Matthew Wood, William Tyler Romaine (Chelsea), John Zachary Romaine, and Reed Lanning Hildebrand; four brothers, Thomas W. Wood, John C. Wood, Jimmy S. Wood, and Richard C. Wood; and four sisters, Ruth Wampler, Yvonne Hamrick, Sandra Sibert and Deborah Myers. In addition to his wife of 53 years and parents, he is preceded in death by a brother, Joseph J. Wood. A Celebration of Life will be conducted at 3:30 p.m., Thursday, September 29, 2016 at Marquis Memorial United Methodist Church by Rev. Robert Sharp and Chaplain Karen Moore. Private graveside rites will be provided by Staunton-Augusta VFW Post #2216 at Oak Lawn Mausoleum and Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends following the service at the church. The family wishes to extend heartfelt thanks to his special caregivers, Judy, Mavis, Cissy, Geneva and Ruth. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Marquis Memorial United Methodist Church, 1611 W Beverley Street, Staunton, VA 24401.
